This policy provides cover to homeowners/householders against loss or damage to the private dwellings/buildings, household goods and personal belongings against fire, theft, riot and strike, malicious damage, floods, explosion, lightning and thunderbolt. It also offers personal liability to third parties as a result of negligence by the insured client and work injuries benefits to domestic servants.

It contains various sections as follows:-

  • Contents
  • All risks
  • Workmen compensation
  • Owners and occupiers liability

Section A: Buildings

This section covers loss of or damage to a private dwelling house or a private flat shown in the schedule including outbuildings, land lords fixtures and fittings, walls, gates and fences on the same premises caused by:

Fire and natural causes such as earthquakes, storms and tempests, lightning and floods;

Human causes such as riots and strikes, malicious damage, and theft; Chemical related such as explosives like domestic gas cylinders and miscellaneous causes including bursting and overflowing of water tanks, apparatus, pipes, impact by road vehicles and animals not belonging to or under control of the insured or their agents. The cover is optionally extended to cover reasonable additional expenses of alternative accommodation and Loss of rent payable to the client.

Section B: Contents

This section covers loss of or damage to furniture, household goods and personal effects of every description the property of the client or any member of his family normally residing with the client and fixtures and fittings, which the client owns or for which he is legally responsible not being landlords fixtures and fittings.

The cover can be extended to cover temporary removal for contents specified in the schedule while temporarily removed from the premises/buildings on visit to any private dwelling residence, hotel, boarding house, nursing home or hospital or in a laundry etc. and reasonable additional expenses of alternative accommodation and loss of rent paid to the client.

The policy covers the clients contents against all perils listed above under the buildings section and theft. Any item whose value constitutes over 5% of the total sum insured on contents must specifically declared when taking up cover.

Section C: All risks

This section covers loss of/ or damage to movable property e.g. portable items such as cameras, cell phones, radios, jewellery, projectors and sports kits etc., by any cause or peril not specifically excluded.

The policy has a very wide scope of cover and therefore the items covered must be listed with a value indicated against each item.

Section D: Work Injury Benefits Act

This section compensates the client against liability at law including liability under the Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA). The compensation provided follows the WIBA which states that employers must compensate employees for injuries or death or disease that arises out of and in course of their employment.

It is set out to pay compensation to any domestic servant who has sustained bodily injury or death by accident or diseases arising out of and in the course of his/her employment by the insured client in the connection with the clients house, garden, stable or motor cars.

The policy covers domestic servants like house help, watchmen/ guards, grounds men, gardeners and drivers.

Section E: Owners Liability

This section compensates the insured client against liability at law and pay compensation in respect of;

  • Accidental bodily injury (including illness) to any person other than a member of the clients family or household or a person in his service at the time of the occurrence giving rise to an injury.
  • Accidental loss of or damage to property belonging to or in the custody or control of the insured or of a member of his family or household or a person in his service. These should have occurred in the premises for which the insured is legally liable as the owner of the premises.

An example of a situation where liability can arise is where a home owners dog attacks a passersby causing injury. The homeowner will be legally liable to compensate the third party.

Section F: Occupiers and personal Liability

This section compensates the client against liability at law and pay compensation in respect of;

  • Accidental bodily injury (including illness) to any person other than a member of the clients family or household or a person in his service at the time of the occurrence giving rise to an injury.
  • Accidental loss of or damage to property belonging to or in the custody or control of the insured or of a member or his family or household or a person in his service. These should have occurred in the premises for which the insured is legally liable as the owner of the premises.

The cover is for liability occurring in the premises for which the client is legally liable as the occupier of the premises. Personal liability may occur anywhere in daily life.

 

In order to place a Home insurance Package, the client will ideally need to complete a proposal form which contains the undernoted details:-

  • Full Name of the client /proposer for insurance, physical residential address, Postal Address, Telephone Contact, PIN Number, Occupation (from which client derives his income).
  • Value (s) of the property to be insured, Residential Building, Home contents, Number of domestic Employees, List and values of movable items and desired limits of liability.

In the event of a claim occurring under the home package Insurance, we shall require the following documents in order to process the claim:-

  • A Duly completed Claim form.
  • Police abstract report.
  • Replacement invoices or/& purchase receipts/ proforma invoices.
  • Statement on the circumstance of the loss
  • Witness(es) statement(s).
